Thriving Like a Star: A Night to Shine for Stroke Survivors ✨
✨ The lights will shine brighter this November 6th as Stroke Life Center hosts its largest annual fundraiser—Thriving Like a Star!✨
Get ready to dust off your dancing shoes and practice your applause—because on Thursday, November 6, the Stroke Life Center is rolling out the red carpet at the Hilton Garden Inn at Levis Commons for our premier fundraiser: Thriving Like a Star!
Think “Dancing with the Stars”… with more heart, more laughter, and a mission that truly matters. Survivors, caregivers, business leaders, and community champions will gather for an evening of dinner, dazzling performances, and a silent auction full of treasures. And yes—you’ll get to cheer as our local celebrity dancers take the floor with choreography designed by the amazing DanceFam Ballroom & Latin Studio.
This unforgettable evening is made possible thanks to the generous support of our Presenting Sponsor, Mercy Health, whose commitment to community wellness aligns perfectly with the Stroke Life Center’s mission. We’re also grateful to our Media Partner, 13abc, for helping us spread the word and shine a spotlight on stroke survivors, and to our Entertainment Partner DanceFam Ballroom & Latin Studio, whose creativity and passion bring the night’s performances to life.
This isn’t just a night of sequins and salsa steps—it’s an evening that helps keep the Stroke Life Center’s programs completely free for survivors and caregivers across Northwest Ohio. From art therapy to aqua therapy, speech therapy to social outings, every sponsorship, ticket, and bid helps stroke survivors keep thriving long after rehab ends.
And let’s be honest: where else can you see your favorite community leaders attempt the tango, the cha-cha, or maybe even the Viennese Waltz—all while raising money for a cause that changes lives?
“Thriving Like a Star is proof that fundraising doesn’t have to be stuffy,” says Kenneth Humphrey, President of the Stroke Life Center’s Board of Directors. “It’s about celebrating resilience, laughing together, and showing the community what’s possible when we support each other.”
Your Impact at a Glance
40+ survivors each month receive free physical, speech, and art therapy to rebuild strength and confidence.
For more than a decade, the Stroke Life Center has helped hundreds of stroke survivors and caregivers rebuild independence and confidence through its free programs and peer support.
Dozens of creative and social programs bring laughter, joy, and healing beyond traditional therapy.
100% of funds raised stay local to support free programs in Northwest Ohio & Southeast Michigan.
✨ Together, we’re not just raising money—we’re helping survivors thrive like stars.✨

Survivor Spotlight: Ed Steinberger
Ed Steinberg:
"What I can do, I should do."
If you've spent any time at the Stroke Life Center, you've probably received one of Ed Steinberger's calls—complete with a silly, pre-recorded birthday song that never fails to make you smile. Known for his quick wit and generous spirit, Ed has been part of our family since the very beginning. He was our sixth member, back when we gathered around co-founder Cindy Roshon's dining room table. Fourteen years later, he remains one of our most loyal and uplifting members.
A Life Built on Passion
Before April 10, 2011, Ed had built a career doing what he loved: connecting with people while traveling the Midwest selling poultry vaccines. From Kentucky to Canada, Pennsylvania to Maine, Ed didn't just sell vaccines—he educated veterinarians and farmers on how to keep their flocks healthy. His colleagues knew him as both a skilled professional and someone who could make them laugh.
Despite his dedication, Ed insists he "never worked a day in his life" because he loved what he did. That's the kind of person Ed is.
Humor as Medicine
That trademark sense of humor didn't disappear after his stroke—if anything, it became part of his recovery. Whether he's teasing a server at lunch, joking with his siblings, or lightening the mood with a fellow survivor, Ed's playful spirit (what friends affectionately call his "equal opportunity harassment") makes him a cornerstone of our community.
He's also the member you can count on for a ride to the Center—often with a lunch stop along the way. His personal motto says it all: "What I can do, I should do." It reflects his belief in perseverance and gratitude, and his commitment to doing a little more each day. As Ed puts it, "Be content, but never satisfied, because you can always do better."
The Road to Recovery
Ed admits the hardest part after his stroke was simply not understanding what had happened to him. But hope came in small moments—outings to Skyline Chili with his brother and brother-in-law, Tuesday physical therapy sessions with Angela at the Center, and his dedication to the gym every weekday morning.
"The Stroke Life Center is a safe place," Ed says. "No one judges you here."
When asked what he wishes people understood about stroke recovery, his answer is immediate: "Stroke recovery is never ending." It's a lifelong journey, one he continues to embrace with determination and grace.
The Power of Partnership
Ed credits much of his progress to his wife, Rita, whom he calls "phenomenal." She gives him the freedom to explore, to stumble, and to grow. Together, they've navigated recovery's challenges with resilience and love.
What Thriving Looks Like
In those early years, Ed dreamed of running again. As time passed, his goals evolved—and that's okay. Thriving once meant crossing the street before the light changed. He's done that.
Now, Ed’s next milestone begins this December when he starts Vivistim therapy — a treatment bringing new hope for movement in his arm, hand, and leg. His goal? To one day trim the fingernails on his right hand himself.
It may seem small, but for Ed, it’s everything: practical, powerful, and proof of progress.
Why Ed Inspires Us
Ed brings more than humor and birthday songs to the Stroke Life Center. He brings perspective. He shows every survivor, caregiver, and volunteer that progress isn't always dramatic—it's determination, joy, and the courage to set the next goal, no matter how small it may seem.
Today, Ed not only thrives as one of our longest-standing members—he also serves on our Board of Directors, lending his voice, humor, and hard-won wisdom to help guide the organization he's helped build since day one.
Ed's story reminds us that thriving isn't just about recovery. It's about community, perseverance, and the small victories that add up to a life fully lived.

Director’s Corner
Cindy Roshon, Stroke Life Center Co-Founder, Executive Director
Dear Friends,
At the Stroke Life Center, we believe every person has a light within them—a spark that refuses to dim, even in the face of challenge. Thriving Like a Star isn’t just the name of our gala—it’s a reflection of what I see every single day in our community. It’s in the determination of survivors relearning to move, to speak, to connect. It’s in the caregivers who show up with endless compassion. It’s in every laugh, every shared meal, every small victory we celebrate together.
This year’s gala is more than a night of dinner and dancing—it’s a celebration of that light. Each of us has traveled a different path, but together, we shine brighter. When we gather on November 6th, we’re not just raising funds; we’re raising hope. Every sponsorship, every auction item, and every story told helps keep our programs free and our doors open to those who need us most.
So, let’s come together and sparkle—because thriving isn’t about perfection, it’s about perseverance, love, and the courage to keep going. Whether you’re a survivor, a caregiver, a volunteer, or a friend of SLC, you are part of a constellation that lights the way for others.
With gratitude and joy,
Cindy Roshon, Co-Founder & Executive Director

♥️ Hearts and Cards: A Night to Remember ♦️
On September 25th, our quarterly euchre tournament at Mercy Health St. Anne's Hospital was a heartwarming success! With every table filled, we came together to support stroke survivors while honoring two beloved members we recently lost: Kenneth Fullenlove, an avid euchre player whose enthusiasm made every tournament memorable, and Marge Majchrowski, who never played but never missed a tournament.
Community Support Shines
The evening showcased remarkable generosity. BNI Platinum Partners sponsored our cash prizes, while ForestView Lanes, Cornerstone Caregiving, and Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice donated raffle baskets. Robin Piccione with EA Lewis & Associates served as our energetic MC, keeping everything running smoothly. Thanks to Candice Fullenlove with Mercy Health and a Stroke Life Center Board Member for securing our venue.
New to this tournament was our beginner's table, welcoming those just learning the game and embodying our inclusive mission.
The True Victory
The most touching moment came when every cash prize winner donated their winnings back to the Stroke Life Center! This spontaneous generosity, along with all tournament proceeds, directly funds our programs for stroke survivors and their caregivers at no cost to participants.
Thank You
Watching survivors, caregivers, and community supporters share laughter over card games perfectly captures our vision: life after stroke includes joy, competition, and community. Kenneth and Marge would have been proud.
Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our mission. Together, we're proving there is life—and community—after stroke.

SLC Monthly Dinner Out: A Night at Brickhouse Restaurant & Bar

Our Stroke Life Center family filled the Brickhouse Restaurant & Bar with laughter, conversation, and the clinking of dinner plates during this month’s outing. The turnout was so strong we packed two full rows of tables—eight tables in all!
The menu did not disappoint. From sizzling entrées to comfort-food favorites, there was something for everyone—but the clear star of the night was the perch dinner, which quickly became the most-ordered plate at the table.
What made the evening truly special, though, wasn’t just the food—it was the company. Survivors, caregivers, and friends shared stories, swapped smiles, and proved once again that support and community can be just as nourishing as a great meal.
We left Brickhouse with full stomachs and even fuller hearts. Thank you to everyone who joined us—you made this monthly tradition one to remember!
